We’ve all seen typos in the text from television closed captioning. Some are nonsense and some are hilarious. Like the one I read this morning. I had woken up early this morning (5 a.m.) to prepare for a conference call I needed to attend at 8 a.m. Trying to stay alert, I had turned on the television to have The Today Show running in the background. I didn’t want the noise to disturb Xian so I had the mute on with closed captioning running so I could occasionally look at the screen if I was getting dazed. I glanced up to see Matt Lauer talking about Katie being off for a few days but saying that later in the show, we would be able to see an excerpt from her interview with Jennifer Wilbanks. But that’s the gist of what was said not what I read. I’m not exactly sure how the system works, but I believe the spell check may be to blame. Apparently, someone was attempting to type Jennifer and may have typed Genif trying to get the name right. I believe this is when spell check took over and made the word Genitalia. So if you’ve been following me so far, you’ll see that the closed captioning read something pretty close to, “and later we will get to see another excerpt from Katie’s interview with Genitalia — Jennifer Wilbanks”. . .
